Size and Contents of Zoo Menu Canned Box Turtle Food

This food comes in a 6-ounce can that can feed up to four turtles (or one turtle four times!).

According to Zoo Med, the ingredients include corn, apples and carrots. Essential vitamins include:

  • Vitamin A Acetate: To keep mucous membranes healthy (prevents eye swelling)
  • Vitamin K (from Bisulfite Complex): Helps prevent bleeding and liver problems
  • Vitamin D-3: Essential for bone and shell health (it helps your turtle absorb calcium)

The food contains fewer preservatives than some others, so your pet gets more real food and less chemicals. It does contain a flavoring agent (all natural) that box turtles find very enticing.

Ease of Use/How to Use

This food is simple to use. Just pop open the can and spoon out a serving. Zoo Med recommends 1/4 of the can for one box turtle. Although it doesn’t have its own resealable lid, the can is the same size as a cat food can, so lids designed for those will also work on this.

Although this food does contain a lot of needed vitamins and nutrients, it does not contain enough protein to be a complete food for your pet. Make sure you give her other foods, too. Grasshoppers, mealworms and other insects are good choices for adding protein.

Do Box Turtles Actually Like Zoo Med’s Canned Food?

Many reviewers state that their box turtles absolutely love this food. That shouldn’t be surprising, since it contains fruits and veggies that they love. Several reviewers found that their box turtles would devour this even when refusing other foods. So if your boxie is off his feed, consider trying some of this.

That said, not every box turtle apparently finds it all that appealing. At least one reviewer’s boxie turned up her nose at it.

The food even smells good (kind of like bananas).

Our Box Turtle Franklin simply devours Zoo-Med Box Turtle Food. I love it because it contains all of the nutrients that Franklin needs. We use the very easy to buy cat food lids on the food and it stays fresh for weeks in our fridge. We would recommend less than a 1/4 of a can. We find 1/8 of a can to be about as much as Franklin will eat at one time.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with this food!

I’m not surprised Franklin is eating less than Zoo Med suggests. Manufacturer recommendations are a good place to start, but just like people, turtles have different appetites, so it’s important to adjust amounts based on your pet’s needs.

That’s just what you did, so good job! Franklin’s a lucky box turtle 🙂

My box turtle, Boxy, loves this food very much and it is his very favorite food. I’m even thinking of getting another boxie and I will feed her this food as well. I’m very glad that I have Zoo Med canned turtle food for Boxy!
