There’s a Turtle in The Road!

Helping a turtle cross the road

How can you help a turtle in the road?

Spring & summer means lots of animals on the move. Sometimes in the road.

And unfortunately even the quick ones don’t always make it across safely. 😢 And for slow-moving turtles a busy road can be a death trap.

But you can help!

In most cases it just takes a few minutes to get a turtle safely out of the road and on its way to wherever it was going.

(Key words here are “where it was going.” Please don’t bring it someplace you think would be “better.” The turtle may not agree.).

So how can you help?

Recent turtle news we found interesting.

It’s another short one this week. There’s some sea turtles, Bell’s turtles, and a snapping turtle. And sadly more poaching.

Also, this will be the last Turtle News Briefs for a while. We’ll still share the occasional interesting story, but won’t be doing turtle news round-ups for at least the next few months.

Instead the plan is to do some updating of the website and be a bit more active again on social media.

Recent Box Turtle News

No real box turtle stories this week. There’s a picture of a boxie for National Pet Day. And a rather odd story out of Indiana with the turtles as kind of a side note.

A Happy National Pet Day from Frances the box turtle: A picture & a brief bio. 💚

Box turtle parts?!: A couple was arrested after officers found a variety of illegal items in their home, including a meth lab and “box turtle parts.” I sure hope those “parts” were already parts when they found them (which they claim). (Indiana)

Also 2 stolen turtles are returned. Tiny terrapins go back into the wild. And video of a deputy serving & protecting a rather small & slow citizen.

Recent turtle news we found interesting.

It’s another short list this week, with some happy stories, some sad stories, and some irritating stories (traffickers. Ugh!).

But we hope you have a turtle-ly awesome weekend and upcoming week!

🐢

Recent Box Turtle News

This week’s box turtle stories are about studying wild populations without changing them too much. And a TV appearance from a not-so-wild boxie who seemed a bit bored with the whole thing.

Minimizing stress on box turtles during study: Monitoring the turtles is important for learning about them & protecting them. But too much handling is stressful & may make them less likely to react quick enough to escape actual predators. So this sanctuary came up with a simple way to quickly identify animals that have already been surveyed for the season.

Meet Malcolm the Eastern box turtle: Malcolm calls the Boonshoft Museum in Dayton, Ohio home & he made a appearance on a local morning show recently. Video.

Turtle news we found interesting recently.

Sea turtle nesting season is back in the US! And some other countries, too.

Turtles will be coming out of hibernation soon, and it’s time to start thinking about how to protect them.

That includes box turtles!

Also, something good comes from that huge oil spill.

There’s a new turtle exhibit at SeaWorld San Antonio.

And of course there’s another turtle trafficking story. At least the trafficker was caught and the turtles rescued. But the man who threw a turtle may get away with it?

Recent Box Turtle News

Ornate box turtles in the news! Two states are working hard to protect their ornate boxie populations. But first they need to know how big those populations are.

Surveying Kansas’ ornate box turtles: Seven zoos in Kansas are working together to learn how many boxies still live in the state and figure out how to keep them safe. After all, the ornate box turtle is Kansas’ state reptile! Includes video.

Protecting Iowa’s ornate box turtles: Iowa is also concerned about the fate of its only land turtle. The Bur Oak Land Trust is bringing in “turtle dogs” to help survey the boxies living on one of its properties.

Recent turtle news we found interesting.

With sea turtle nesting season returning to the US, it’s time for reminders about keeping beaches safe for moms & babies alike.

Meanwhile nesting & hatching continues in other parts of the world, too.

There’s also some interesting work studying DNA from sea turtle nests, and promising results from a study on adding lights to gillnets.

But it’s not all about sea turtles. We also found stories on the Sulawesi Forest Turtle, Blanding’s turtles, and giant turtles.

Plus more.

Recent Box Turtle News

We didn’t find any Asian or American box turtles in the news this week. Luckily we can always manage to come across a picture or 2 to keep us happy.

🐢

It’s a very short and (mostly) sweet news digest this week.

There’s new research on an Asian box turtle, kids helping turtles, and a mystery in Texas.

Also sea turtle harvesting still banned in Fiji, smugglers stopped in Malaysia, and a cool look at how aquatic turtles spend their winters.

Plus a bit more.

🐢

Recent Box Turtle News

American box turtles are still staying out of the news these days. But one heavily trafficked Asian box turtle would like you to please leave it alone so it can help the environment (and local industry).

Southeast Asian box turtle is helpful to the lumber industry?! Yep, apparently it helps some tree seeds germinate. And some of those trees are important for lumber. Sadly this pretty and important little turtle is also the most heavily trafficked turtle in the world. 🙁
