Today we have a fun opportunity to study box turtles, and a grumpy box turtle waiting to be reunited with its family.

Ever wanted to study box turtles? Here’s your chance! The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is looking for field assistants for 2018. It’s an unpaid internship, but it looks like fun!

Let Hector go home! The “grumpy” box turtle has been stuck at Gatwick Airport for more than 2 months. Her mom was accused of trying to smuggle her into the UK. Airport officials are charging 200 per month until the case is resolved. The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay it.

Today we found a story of a kind man who welcomes boxies to his garden. And another man who’s much less kind to wildlife.

He welcomes box turtles to his garden: He shares a picture of one enjoying one of his home-grown tomato. 🐢   

Snake smuggler also smuggled box turtles: Remember the story about the king cobras in the potato chip cans? The guy who did that also shipped 6 box turtles from the U.S. to Hong Kong.  😢He had other protected turtles at his home as well.

No new box turtle news today.    

Enjoy these repeats, if you missed them before:

  • Fiberglass box turtle: A vet in Ohio fixed a boxie’s broken shell with fiberglass a few years ago and released him. Recently she discovered her old patient just hanging out in the woods. How did she know it was him? The fiberglass “bandage” was still attached!
  • Good news for the Keeled Box Turtle: This species of Asian Box Turtle is endangered, like so many of its cousins. But the Turtle Conservation Center has had recent success with breeding them. It says 2016 was its best year yet.
  • This yard is a box turtle haven!: At least one guy counts it as part of his regular habitat. <3 The author includes pictures of the very colorful male turtle.
