It’s another light turtle news week, but humans are still working hard to understand & help the turtles. They’re studying tumors, cleaning up reefs, and tracking babies.

They’re also holding festivals, opening a rescue/hatchery center, and choosing turtles over casinos (maybe).

There’s also rescues, hatchings, and finally a move for the live turtle museum in Singapore. Plus more.

This week’s turtle-related stories include fines for stealing eggs & shipping turtles … although we’re unsure why apparently 2 sea turtle eggs are worth much more than 27 box turtles?

We check in on the sea turtle ambassador found in a trash can & see where some tracked turtles have been traveling this past year.

Recent Box Turtle News

This week the case of a man caught shipping boxies gets resolved. And a zoo shows off its babies.

Charges for transporting box turtles dismissed: The man had shipped 27 box turtles from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Las Vegas back in 2017. He must still pay a $1000 fine.

The Tulsa zoo recently welcomed some new babies, including an Eastern box turtle. Isn’t it adorable?!

Turtle stories we found interesting recently.

It’s a short list this week. The turtles must be recovering from the holidays just like us!

Or maybe it’s just the natural cycle. In the US most turtles are brumating (hibernating) and sea turtles aren’t nesting. Cold-stunning season is mostly over, although cold-stunned patients are still recovering.

And a few sea turtles got to go home for the holidays.

Elsewhere sea turtles are nesting, if a bit late in some cases. But others never make it to the beach. 😕

There’s also some rescues, some conservation news & more.

Recent Box Turtle News

American box turtles are still keeping a low profile.

But one of their Asian cousins made the news this week. This turtle may be more rare than our boxies. But conservationists are trying to give it a helping hand.

Can the golden coin turtle be saved? Conservationists sure hope so. The only place in the wild you can still find this Asian box turtle species is Hong Kong. And even there it’s almost impossible to find. But there’s a good breeding program going on, also in Hong Kong. And hopefully one day soon some of those captive turtles can head out into the wild with legal protections that allow them to thrive. Includes pictures & video.

After being mostly no-shows in the news lately, this week we found 3 box turtle stories! Two are happy. The 3rd involves a smuggler and a possible deal.

Elsewhere sea turtles are still washing ashore, cold & lethargic. And still getting tangled in human-created garbage. The lucky ones get rescued in time. And eventually get to go back home.

But plastic & other garbage isn’t the only threat they face. Apparently we’re sending chemicals into their homes too.

Other turtles find themselves headed for the wildlife trade. But some of them get lucky too.

No, the news isn’t all sad. Florida’s green sea turtles are doing great. And tracking released turtles is both fun and educational.

Recent Box Turtle News

Box turtle stories were popular this week! And so was one little boxie who found herself at a shelter … but not for long.  💚 Elsewhere an injured boxie will spend the winter getting pampered.

And a box turtle smuggler wants a deal. 😕

Box turtle more popular than puppies & kittens?! Ok, probably not, but even those furry cuties usually spend more than one day at the shelter before getting adopted. But not Bata! Her family surrendered her on Thursday & she went to her new home Friday.  💚 (Arkansas)

Injured boxie all ready for release: But it’ll spend the winter at Wild Care Cape Cod & head out to the wild come spring.

Plea deal for box turtle smuggler: It’s not a done deal yet, but he has agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a deal.

Turtle stories were a bit scarce this week … kind of like turtles themselves in much of the US. Cold-stunned sea turtles do keep washing ashore along the east coast. And they’re keeping rescuers like the head turtle research coordinator at Mass. Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary quite busy.

Sadly turtle traffickers are not scarce (but they are busy), as a new report makes entirely too clear. 🙁

But on the brighter side, people who want to help turtles, including schoolchildren, also are not scarce. Hopefully they can make enough of a difference in time to save these ancient and fascinating creatures.

Patricia settles down after her 15 minutes of fame: The ornate box turtle found herself guest-starring on a morning show in Laredo, Texas after the show’s producer found her wandering around outside. She’ll now call the Lamar Bruni Vergara Science Center home. Includes video.
