Patricia settles down after her 15 minutes of fame: The ornate box turtle found herself guest-starring on a morning show in Laredo, Texas after the show’s producer found her wandering around outside. She’ll now call the Lamar Bruni Vergara Science Center home. Includes video.

We only found one boxie story this week, but it’s a good one!

Remember the Eastern box turtle who’s been rolling around on a custom-built Lego wheelchair? He’s out of the wheelchair & ready for brumation! (that’s like hibernation, but for reptiles). Check out the video of zoo staff taking off the wheelchair & him getting his first taste of his big, roomy brumation box … I bet he loves that huge pile of leaves, perfect for burrowing! 😊

Turtle news we found interesting recently.

It was a slow turtle new week, but we did find a boxie rehab story and baby turtle stories … which always makes for a good week in our book!

There were also some rescues & releases. And unfortunately more smuggling stories. But at least they were caught.

Plus turtles off California coast will soon be safer. And more.

Recent Box Turtle News

This week we found both sad & happy box turtle stories. One man sees them as nothing but money while a wildlife sanctuary goes to great lengths to help one heal.

Caught trafficking in box turtles: A man in Oklahoma has been charged with shipping box turtles from Oklahoma to a pet store in Las Vegas. 🙁 If he’s convicted he could spend up to a year in prison.

And in happier news, did you see this rehabilitated beauty when we shared the post on Facebook earlier this week? Tails of Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary wired & zip-tied this guy together to give his shell time to heal. And it worked!

This week we came across an awesome story of ingenuity in solving an unusual injury. We shared it on our Facebook page, but in case you missed it …

How do you make a wheelchair for a box turtle? With LEGOS! An Eastern box turtle came in to the Maryland Zoo with a cracked plastron. Since that’s an unusual injury they had to get creative with the repair and how to keep the shell off the ground until it healed. Includes pictures and video. 💖

And here’s Bunkle, a handsome fellow who lives at American Tortoise Rescue. Apparently he was ATR’s 1st land turtle rescue more than 25 years ago! He looks quite pleased with himself.

David Beckham is safely back at the zoo: No, not that David Beckham! David Beckham the Florida box turtle who was stolen from the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo back in May.

70-year-old box turtle comes out to say hi: A brother & sister ran across an old friend in the same field where they 1st saw him back in 1967. 💚

As usual sea turtles are nesting & hatching around the world. But these happy stories never get old! Also fun is naming a baby turtle & a birthday party for a really old turtle.

Sadly there’s also turtles trapped in fishing nets & other garbage, or eating plastic. The lucky ones get rescued.

Florida’s red tide is still hanging on. And a few treatment facilities keep trying to help the affected turtles.

Also researchers keep finding new ways to learn as much as possible about all kinds of turtles & how to help them.

We have a baby sea turtle in need of a name. Also turtles (sea and others) rescued & released.

And sea turtles affected by red tide. And turtle conservation. Also drones make turtle protection easier.

We found 2 stories affecting boxies this week … and sadly neither are feel-good stories. ☹️

Proposed electrical transmission line re-route may harm ornate box turtles: The live within the project area, and the project may result in the “incidental taking”—or unintentional loss—of some animals.  😥 Officials say this will not harm the overall population.

He shipped box turtles to Hong Kong: He labeled at least one box as “toys.” He’s been charged in federal court.

And since we need some positive box turtle vibes too, here’s a stunning dessert box turtle to enjoy. He lives at Garden State Tortoise.
