Turtle News Briefs

🐢

Interesting turtle news you may have missed recently.

We didn’t find any new stories about box turtles this week.

But we did find lots of sea turtle news, including a wedding ceremony (yes, really!) and a surprise encounter with a group of leatherbacks.

Also a runaway tortoise is back home, and campers help baby snappers find the lake.  Plus a reminder about buying tiny turtles (don’t!).

Recent U. S. Turtle News

The best camping trip ever (baby turtles!), a turtle birthday party, and a final tribute for a loved turtle rescuer, among other stories.

Accidental turtle rescuers: They were just camping. Then snapping turtles started hatching! With park ranger approval, they helped the babies get to a nearby lake.  (Minnesota) 💚 🐢 💚

Back away from that cute tiny turtle! Buying a cute little turtle on impulse is usually a bad idea. It’s probably a baby red-eared slider. So it’s not going to stay tiny. It’s going to be expensive to keep. And if it’s smaller than 4 inches, it’s also illegal to sell.

Stories include celebrating turtles, missing turtles, and releasing turtles.

Also stealing from turtle researchers (unsuccessfully!), poaching turtles, and yet another turtle vs plastic story.  😠 Plus more.

Recent Box Turtle News

Running across a turtle in the wild is always a thrill. Sadly, the thrills have gotten fewer and far between.

  • A tale of two turtles: Most specifically, a box turtle and a snapping turtle. Each apparently using the same Pennsylvania yard for its own purposes.
  • Missing box turtles in Indiana: The author used to see them everywhere. These days they’re a rare sight. Help them if you can!

Meet Jake, a pampered box turtle in a place where turtle pets are often taken for granted.

Keeping a box turtle safe: Jake the box turtle has a lush, escape-proof “tortress.” He’s one lucky guy. But his humans learned the hard way, after an animal killed their previous boxie while they were away.

Turtles stories we found interesting recently.

We found a box turtle internship, sea turtles surviving hurricane Harvey, and a living turtle museum looking for a new home.

Recent Box Turtle News

Today we have a fun opportunity to study box turtles, and a grumpy box turtle waiting to be reunited with its family.

Ever wanted to study box turtles? Here’s your chance! The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is looking for field assistants for 2018. It’s an unpaid internship, but it looks like fun!

Let Hector go home! The “grumpy” box turtle has been stuck at Gatwick Airport for more than 2 months. Her mom was accused of trying to smuggle her into the UK. Airport officials are charging 200 per month until the case is resolved. The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay it.

Turtle news we found interesting recently.

Box turtles in the garden, spotted turtles on the road, and a town just for turtles. Plus lots of sea turtles.

Recent Box Turtle News

Today we found a story of a kind man who welcomes boxies to his garden. And another man who’s much less kind to wildlife.

He welcomes box turtles to his garden: He shares a picture of one enjoying one of his home-grown tomato. 🐢

Snake smuggler also smuggled box turtles: Remember the story about the king cobras in the potato chip cans? The guy who did that also shipped 6 box turtles from the U.S. to Hong Kong.  😢He had other protected turtles at his home as well.
