More sea turtle nests and babies. Reminders to leave the turtles & their nests alone. And a missing turtle mystery.

Eliza Ann’s back!: Just last week we shared how this loggerhead sea turtle has made two nests so far this season. Well, her tracker showed her returning to the beach July 15. Unfortunately, it looks like a false crawl, but everyone’s hoping she’ll lay a 3rd nest!   

Who stole Millennium?: He’s a 100-year-old African spurred tortoise. He disappeared from the Alley Pond Environmental Center in Queens (NY). The center just wants him back, and they promise no questions asked.

First loggerhead babies in 30+ years: Higgs Beach in Key West doesn’t really have enough sand for turtle nests. But one mama decided the beach volleyball court would do just fine. Her babies (104 of ‘em!) toddled to the sea on a recent Sunday night.   

Thoughts on turtle laying season: Enjoying turtles in nature, where they belong.

Helping kids help stranded sea creatures: The Marine Mammal Stranding Center teaches kids what to do if they see a stranded turtle or other animal on the beach. (New Jersey)

A reminder about beach furniture: Nesting season isn’t over, and at least 3 mama turtles have gotten tangled in beach furniture recently. Let’s help them out & put away our stuff after a day on the beach!

Charges for shooting turtle: It was out of season and they just left it in the road. 🙁 (Michigan)

Stop writing on sea turtle nests! Seriously. They’re marked so you can avoid them. Not to make it easier to vandalize them. 🙁

Amazing turtle art, why beach bonfires are a bad idea, and heartwarming turtle (and egg!) rescues.

Turning garbage into turtle art: Artist creates giant wood turtle out of local trash. It’s part of a street arts festival. And a way to highlight how our garbage affects nature. More than a ton of plastic waste went into the turtle. (New Brunswick, Canada)

Did a bonfire kill sea turtle hatchlings? It looks like probably yes. 😢 (Trinidad and Tobago)

She’s incubating 693 eggs! And it’s more work than you might think, making sure they stay warm and humid until they hatch (probably in August). (Ontario)

Stub is down to one leg: But nobody’s giving up on her! The Blanding’s turtle showed up at the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre full of eggs and with an infected foot. They saved the eggs, amputated the foot, and are helping her heal.  (Nova Scotia)

A sea turtle’s unlucky and lucky day: The bad luck was finding and trying to eat a plastic bag full of quarters. The good luck was the scuba divers who swam over for a closer look. They were able to remove the bag, probably saving its life.
