Studying ornate box turtles: The Cornell College research has been going on for years. But this year they’re also trying to learn how the turtles see each other, using UV light.

Recent U. S. Turtle News

More sea turtle nests and babies. Reminders to leave the turtles & their nests alone. And a missing turtle mystery.

Eliza Ann’s back!: Just last week we shared how this loggerhead sea turtle has made two nests so far this season. Well, her tracker showed her returning to the beach July 15. Unfortunately, it looks like a false crawl, but everyone’s hoping she’ll lay a 3rd nest!

Who stole Millennium?: He’s a 100-year-old African spurred tortoise. He disappeared from the Alley Pond Environmental Center in Queens (NY). The center just wants him back, and they promise no questions asked.

First loggerhead babies in 30+ years: Higgs Beach in Key West doesn’t really have enough sand for turtle nests. But one mama decided the beach volleyball court would do just fine. Her babies (104 of ‘em!) toddled to the sea on a recent Sunday night.

Today we have a relatively short list of turtle stories from around the US and the world. Most are good news and hopeful stories.

Recent Box Turtle News

Still no new box turtle stories, but we still like these three from last week. Check them out if you haven’t already.

  • Fiberglass box turtle: A vet in Ohio fixed a boxie’s broken shell with fiberglass a few years ago and released him. Recently she discovered her old patient just hanging out in the woods. How did she know it was him? The fiberglass “bandage” was still attached!
  • Bourret’s box turtle babies update: We shared a story about the endangered turtle hatchlings back in June. The National Zoo says they’re doing great … and they may have some younger siblings by the end of July!
  • Good news for the Keeled Box Turtle: This species of Asian Box Turtle is endangered, like so many of its cousins. But the Turtle Conservation Center has had recent success with breeding them. It says 2016 was its best year yet.
