Choosing heat and light bulbs for your box turtle’s home is only half the battle. Then you need to decide what lamp fixture to use. One with a ceramic socket is always a good choice. It will let you use the widest variety of bulbs.

So if you decide to try a different bulb, you’ll still be able to use the same lamp fixture. Most of the time, anyway.

This Deluxe Porcelain Clamp Lamp is a solid choice. It does have a porcelain socket. It clamps securely to the habitat or another sturdy object. And you can cover it to protect you and your pets from burns.

The Zoo Med Wire Cage Clamp Lamp fixture is just the thing for high heat emitting bulbs like ceramic heat emitters (CHEs).

The wire cage is safer for use with these bulbs than an enclosed dome. In fact, according to Zoo Med, this fixture is the only one UL rated for use with CHEs.

It has a ceramic socket, a clamp to hold it in place and an adjustable arm.

Zoo Med PowerSun UV Bulb Review

Zoo Med PowerSun UV LampThe Zoo Med PowerSun(R) UV is a self-ballasted mercury vapor lamp. These are all-in-one lamps that give off light, heat and UV rays (both UVA and UVB) at the same time. This makes them great for creating a healthy basking area for any reptile, including your box turtle.

The UV light penetrates farther than standard UV bulbs, so if you have a tall habitat to keep your boxie from escaping, enough UV can still get to him.

In smaller enclosures this bulb might be overkill and could heat the whole thing too much (you may have to experiment with where to put it to avoid this).

You do need to use the PowerSun bulbs in a ceramic socket (no plastic or other materials), but you don’t need an external ballast (a ballast controls the electrical current to the light). So they’re almost as easy to use as a regular bulb, but they give your pet all the light and heat he needs.

It is important to note that these bulbs do contain mercury. But so do the compact fluorescents we’re all being forced to switch to, so that shouldn’t make much difference at this point. It’s just something to keep in mind.

The Zoo Med Deep Dome Lamp Fixture has an extra long dome, which means just about any size bulb is hidden and protected inside. This looks much better than a lamp sticking out. And it’s safer since you don’t risk touching a hot bulb (the dome can still get hot, so you’ll still want to be careful).

The polished interior reflects light & heat better than other domes. This allows more heat and UV rays get to your pet, which is important to keeping your pet healthy.

Zoo Med Nocturnal Infrared Heat LampThe Zoo Med Nocturnal Infrared Heat Lamp is sort of a combination of the company’s nightlight red bulb and the basking spot lamp. It’s made of red glass, providing very good heat transfer and a red glow like the night light. But it’s designed to focus the heat emitted on a small area right below the lamp, like the basking light.

Since box turtles don’t need high heat overnight, this bulb isn’t strictly necessary (unless you have a sick or injured turtle that needs more heat). But if you prefer the red light over the white, this bulb is a perfectly good alternative to the basking spot lamp (although the basking area is a bit bigger).

Zoo Med Night Light Red Heat Bulbs Review

Zoo Med Night Light Red Heat Bulbs are incandescent bulbs made using red glass, so the light emitted is red, not bright white. This way, you can provide your pet with nighttime heating without disrupting his day/night cycle. If you’re using a basking lamp during the day, this bulb may not be strictly necessary for your box turtle, since they generally do fine with cooler overnight temperatures. On the other hand, it makes a convenient set-it-and-forget-it, 24-hour heat source, especially if you use it with a thermostat or rheostat.

It also provides enough light that you can see your pet at night. It is important to remember that the light emitted does not provide either UVA or UBV rays. If your pet does not get regular time outside, you will need a separate bulb that does provide these light rays.

Almost all reptiles, including box turtles, need UV rays to stay healthy and especially to make Vitamin D. If your pet doesn’t get much time outdoors, you need a bulb that emits both UVA and UVB rays. This bulb fits the bill. It puts out 5% UVB at up to 12 inches away.

Zoo Med Repti Lamp Stand, LargeHang your bulbs and heat emitters safely above your box turtle’s home on this Reptile Lamp Stand from Zoo Med. No more bumping lamps attached to the cage. Or having to move hot lamps to get access to the cage (because face it, planning far enough ahead to turn them off & let them cool just doesn’t happen!).

This stand is also invaluable if you’re using self-ballasted mercury vapor bulbs, which need to point straight down. That’s a whole lot easier when it’s hanging instead of clamped to the habitat.

And it just feels safer to hang hot lamps rather than set them on top of the cover. Call us crazy, but we’re just not big fans of fire!
